RomAroma

Belgium Romania Hungary

The dancers of RomAroma are no doubt the finest gypsy dancers of Transylavania. Their little group consists of some of the winners of an annual gypsy dance competition held in Tirgu Mures (Marosvasarhely) where the most talented of this discipline can be seen racing against each other and the agile fingers of the regions best violinists.

In their performance one can see how tradition can live on becoming a contemporary core element in young people's lives. Just like hip-hop dancers, they use their rhythmically and visually staggering dance that leaves their audience with eyes and mouths wide open as a form of self expression and means to gain recognition.

On the scene solo, couple and group dances are present in freely improvised forms as well as in set choreographies. Contrary to the romantic belief not every "Rom" is born automatically with impeccable dance and music skills, these young people spend long hours practicing their steps and rhythms (on parties as well as amongst each other) bringing them to a perfection that would make a metronome blush.

The musicians are members of the Tirgu Mures folk ensemble. Combining the magyar and the romanian sections. Iacab Attila group is composed by two of the best primas violonist of the region, Attila Jakab and Marcel Râmba, with a very concrete rythmical section by double bass player Tibor Gondos, bratch player Kálmán Koszorusz and Remus Faghiura on accordion.
